Privacy Policy

Hi there!

We are committed to safeguarding the privacy of our website visitors; this policy sets out how we treat your personal information.

The abbreviated version

If you decide not to read everything below (which you should!), here is a quick and to the point summary:

  • If you sign up for one of our newsletters, we will be saving your name, email, and blog information so that we may send you the newsletter you requested.
  • If you submit any forms on our site, such as the comment or contact form, a copy is saved on our blog.
  • Non-identifying information is collected from visitors to provide site analytics.

Your details are only shared with relevant, trusted third parties.

If you want to request a copy of your data or erasure, please contact us by filling out this form.

What personal data we collect and why

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form along with the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection. This information will be shared with Askimet (owned by Automattic), our anti-spam service, to help keep blog spam to a minimum. The Automattic service privacy policy is available here:

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service (also owned by Automattic) to see if you are using it. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Contact Forms

If you fill out a contact form on the site, the entire contents of the form along with your IP address are stored in the database of the site. This is to ensure a copy of the form is always saved in case the email does not get delivered properly.

The contact form submission data (IP address, user agent, email address, site URL, and comment) is also submitted to the Askiment service (owned by Automattic) for spam checking.

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for 180 days.

If you sign up for the newsletter, your name (if provided), email address, and IP address will be stored by our data controller processor, MailChimp, along with the list(s) you subscribed to and your subscription status. This is to ensure you can receive the emails you signed up for.

Analytical information of the emails sent are also collected through MailChimp to keep track of subscriber activity around our newsletters. These include interactions with emails, cookies and other tracking technology. The MailChimp privacy policy is available here:

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Our website uses Jetpack, a web analytics service through Automattic that is built into websites. The data collected by this service about a visitor includes: IP address, user ID (if logged in), username (if logged in), user agent, visiting URL, referring URL, timestamp of event, browser language, and country code.

No data explicitly identifying a specific user is visible to the site owner when using this feature. Stat logs are retained by Automattic for 28 days. The Jetpack service privacy policy is available here (Jetpack is owned and operated by Automattic):

Sharing your personal information

If you sign up for our mailing list, your email is sent to MailChimp in order for them to deliver the mail to you. They are used as a transactional email service. They may store your email address to keep a record of the fact that they sent a mail to you at one point.

If you submit communication using the comment or contact form, your name, email address, IP address and comment will be shared with Automattic for spam detection.

What rights you have over your data

If you have left comments or used the contact form on this site, you can request to receive a copy of the information collected. You can also request that we erase any personal data that we hold about you. Please submit requests using the contact form.
